Discovery Glass

Once an antique dealer, I possessed a remarkable magnifier whose ivory handle was carved with vines and leaves. It is now on display in a French decorative arts museum. But my earliest glass was a utilitarian Boy Scout one of sturdy brass. I studied insects and the skin of my hand. However, after turning my dad’s newspaper into charcoal, it was confiscated, despite my protestation that the glass was an essential tool of scientific discovery.
